Northern Tasmanian Badminton Association is responsible for the promotion and development of Badminton as a competitive sport in Tasmania. Badminton is a game or sport similar to lawn tennis, but is played with a high net and a shuttlecock. The word "Badminton" was named after Badminton House, the Duke of Beautfort's home in Gloucestershire, England. The first rules of the game were written in 1873 in India by the British. During the 1870s and 1880s Badminton was a very popular game in both India and England, although more as a recreational outdoor pastime, rather than a sport. Albert Hall, London, hosted the first professional Open Badminton Tournament in 1979. Badminton become a full medal sport at the Barcelona XXV Olympiad in 1992.

More than 1.1 billion viewers around the world, watched Badminton's Olympic debut on television. Badminton is considered by many to be one of the worlds fastest and most dynamic racquet game or sport. Interest and participation in Badminton has grown substantially over the years. It is now the fifth most popular sport with more than 200 million players worldwide. As an outdoor sport, it is a game that can be played socially as a recreational pastime; competitively as a member of a local Club; or just for fun with friends and family. Badminton lends itself perfectly to family recreational participation, with players ranging from children who can only just get the shuttlecock over the net to some of the fastest and fittest competitors around the world.

Badminton is a game or sport that can be played on the beach, at home in the back yard, or when on holiday. Many Tasmanian resorts cater for the more active guests who like to play a game of tennis or badminton during their stay.

At the November General Meeting it was agreed by a majority of clubs present that for this years winter pennant players may submit their names to play in a “Pool System” With the demise of several clubs players can either submit their names to be in a pool system. (forms are available by ringing NTBA Secretary on 6393 6467, or if clubs wish they can submit teams.
